NO LONGER BANNED! Hmm...how come I never see this title during the big banned books week? Actually, there was a case involving this title and the illegal freight shipment of same, but the California Supreme Court refused to hear it. There WAS another case involving Call House Madam, one Lee Francis and "12 John Does" which is probably a good story, but not good enough for me to go to the library and look it up.
Hype copy on a (far) later paperback version claims "over 400,000 sold" which is not hard to believe, as I expect there were a few hundred thousand fellows in Hollywood who bought it to see if they were named in it. I hope there was an index, or plenty of nervous johns on the West coast would have had to read all "446 pages and 150,000 words." (The ad copy takes advantage of this fear by stressing the book contains "500 CHARACTERS" to insure at least that many sales.)
The cover to the first edition here indicates most of the Madam's clients looked like Dick Tracy mugs. I am going to guess all the subsequent editions were spaced out over the years to capitalize on each NEW call house madam causing nervous headlines.
