Bill Ward signed his work "McCartney" before (and while) creating the later work which defied all physics and physiology. I don't know if anyone has ever figured out why he used two names to sign his work..It wouldn't have been contractual, as I think he was more or less independent while submitting drawings to any magazine which would print them. Maybe he knew the direction he wanted to go, but wasn't sure his earlier fans would go with him? Maybe, during the time of comic witch hunts and such, he found it easier to sell work with another name?
I compiled these prescient, embryonic works from a handful of those shirt pocket magazines which used to abound. They were about the size of your kindle screen...but even at this early stage (mid to late 1950s) his women were already popping off the page larger than life.
